HP DeskJet 6122 Inkjet Printer Review

The HP DeskJet 6122 is another entry into the HP's DeskJet series designed for the small office, it is a quality inkjet printer, and like all HP DeskJet printers you could install it blind folded it is so easy. It is also a small printer taking up 17.9 inches by 17.3 inches of your desktop. The HP DeskJet is a sturdy printer though with many features that underline that it is not designed for the home market.

Great Features in the HP DeskJet 6122

The HP DeskJet has some great features that you find in the bigger HP DeskJet series and the two most important are its network capabilities and the automatic duplex (print on both side) function that is standard out of the box!

An easy to use inkjet for the office

The HP DeskJet 6127 is the network model of the HP DeskJet 6122 and can be hooked up to a network from the box. If you already have an HP DeskJet 6122 and you want to hook it to a network all you need to do is buy network attachments that can connect the HP DeskJet 6127 via Ethernet, Bluetooth or Wi-fi networks.

The handy duplex attachment allows you to print your documents on both sides, and this can really make a difference to the professional look of your documents, although both the graphics and text printing of the HP DeskJet 6122 are disappointing along side other inkjet printers in this price range.

The feature that really shines through when comparing the HP DeskJet 6122 printer, when comparing it with other inkjet printers in this category is the speed at which it prints. This is a close to a staggering 20 pages per minute for black and white text and 13 pages per minute for color. The HP DeskJet 6122 prints at color laser printer speeds but won't cost you the same as a color laser printer, at least initially.

Here are the specifications:

  • black: up to 20ppm
  • color: up to 13ppm
  • 8mb memory (not expandable)
  • Total Input Media Capacity 150 sheets (with $80 attachment)
  • 600 x 600 dpi for monochrome documents
  • 1200 x 1200 dpi for color documents
  • 3 color palette
  • Maximum Duty Cycle: 5,000 prints/month

The DeskJet 6122 takes two reasonably priced ink cartridges. Refills cost $30 for black ink and $35 for a tricolor cartridge. To cut down on ink replacements, you can also purchase a higher-capacity tricolor cartridge for $55.

Our Conclusion on the HP DeskJet 6122

The HP DeskJet 6122 is certainly for the small office as for the home you are far better off with a specialised photo printer or one of the new text-photo hybrids, although you will sacrifice some photo printing quality with the latter. The quality of printing is just not good enough.

The HP DeskJet 6122 can be networked, however, and the duplex function and fast printing speeds will mean any documents you need for that meeting will look good and you won't have to wait forever for them to be finished. Don't forget that it is an expensive printer to run, however. Because of the difference in the cost of consumables you are always going to be better off buying a small color laser printer for your office rather the HP DeskJet 6122.
